Now let’s look at it from the other side, achieving a goal without effort. We get the same lack of satisfaction. When you are just given your goal without effort, it feels hollow. It’s like when you cheat in sport to win. Yeh, you’re the champ, but deep down you know you never earnt it. Things get worse when we combine both together, achieving a meaningless goal without effort. You know, cheating to beat a video game.

What does it mean to not have character? It means wanting the title, the recognition, and the appearance of success, without being willing to do the work, take responsibility, or endure the discipline that real achievement demands.

But what does this look like in real life? It’s the person who wants the title but not the responsibility. They want to be seen as successful, but they don’t want the discipline, pressure, failure, patience, or effort that creates real success. So, instead, they:

  • Look for shortcuts
  • Copy what others are doing
  • Chase appearances
  • Find the fastest way to look like they’ve achieved something, without doing the work that would make the achievement mean something

This is always the problem for leaders that chase easy instead of building the power of character in leadership. They don’t develop any skills, habits, or refine behaviours, and they know it. They watch other people grow, get jealous and upset, then lash out. To make themselves feel better they go for the easy goal with no meaning. And for a few seconds they feel better, but it fades quickly and they are left with a bigger problem, face reality or go for the quick and easy again. This is how addictions start.

This is not an attack on robots, or AI in any way, shape, or form. I want a robot to do the tasks I don’t want to do so that it frees up my time. But they are the meaningless tasks with no real meaningful goal attached, cleaning the house, taking out the rubbish, binge watching the Kardashians. But I will keep the meaningful stuff for myself. Writing my books, leading my team, taking my human wife on holidays we have worked for. Things that push me. People that challenge me. Experiences that develop my character. AI and robots can help to achieve some of those things, but I must be at the core of it all.

The traits of a strong person using ai for leadership come down to doing meaningful work, taking responsibility for your own goals, and being willing to fight for what actually matters, instead of outsourcing the struggle to a machine.

So, ask yourself:

  • Are your goals really something that you are willing to fight for?
  • Do you even have goals?

Find what matters to you, set your goals around that, and then start working for them. You will struggle. You will be challenged, and you will even get hurt. But you will grow. You will become a better person, capable of handling more and doing more. And you will have the success that you, that we all, desire.
